Item: 1975 Indiana Classic Championship Trophy (issued to Coach Bob Knight)
This piece of memorabilia holds a special place in my collection. Aside from the fact this was one of a small few awarded to the players and staff from the undefeated NCAA National Champions of the 1975-76 season, this particular trophy came from the personal collection of Coach Bob Knight. Taking place on December 19-20 of 1975, Indiana would defeat Georgia handily in the first game 93-56, making Bob Knight the youngest coach to reach 200 career victories. IU would go on to defeat Virgina Tech 101-74 in the final to win the 2nd Annual Indiana Classic.
It’s difficult to see from the photo — and even in person — the inscription inside the trophy reads “Champions Indiana Classic 1975” (was moved to the outside years later). The trophy is also much smaller in profile than those in subsequent years.
