Item: Indiana Hoosiers 1981 NCAA Basketball Champions Poster by Walter Wendell Arnett
I fondly remember the day I walked up to a house at a local yard sale to find this print and it’s siblings available for sale. I appreciate the artwork here and it’s still one of my favorite posters. Signed by Walter Wendell Arnett, he would have inked this poster around the age of 70. Here’s a little bit of a background about him (LINK). I thought it was interesting that he considered himself a cartoonist.

Item: “The Shot” Framed Photograph - 1987 NCAA Championship
This photo was taken by Wendell Field — from a different angle than the typical “Shot” photo you likely have seen. This photo was enlarged and professionally mounted on foam board and measures approximately 40” x 44”. I got this from Terry Self, owner of Mid-America Publishing, who said he made several of these for some of his best customers and happened to have a couple left over. He superimposed the score and time on one of the balconies where you’d often find advertisements, scores, etc…a nice little touch. My father and I built a custom frame for it, which I think turned out quite nice.

Another one of my favorite posters — and one not so easy to come by! Inked and printed in 1989 by Magnus Pelkowski, the poster features a well-drawn montage of Coach Knight, Steve Alford, Quinn Buckner, Kent Benson, Isiah Thomas, and Randy Wittman.

Many of you may not have known it, but Magnus Pelkowski was (is) an artist. This is one of the two prints that he did from his time at IU (at least that I’m aware of) featuring a montage of a new banner, Daryl Thomas, Steve Alford, and Todd Meier. Hand numbered 964 / 1000.

Item: 2002 “Shocking the World” Poster - NCAA South Regional Semifinal vs. Duke (signed by Dane Fife / Jarrad Odle)
Serial numbered 378 / 500, this poster expresses the triumph and jubilation of an Indiana Hoosiers team that caught lightning in a bottle and fell just short of hanging another banner in Assembly. It’s signed by both Dane Fife and Jarrad Odle, who also teamed up to sign another print featured in this section.

Item: Indiana University Basketball “Paint the Hall Crimson” Assembly Hall Poster
Made in 2003, this poster features a panoramic view of Assembly Hall. Some interesting facts about the venue are detailed at the bottom. The one I’d like to point out…the roof of Assembly Hall is made up of a staggering 4,500 concrete blocks that are 6 foot long, 30 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. Each weigh 500 pounds for a total of 2.7 million pounds. It wasn’t too long ago I remember my dad and I were starting our drive to B-town for a game and found out about a mile down the road the game had been cancelled because one of these slabs fell and landed in the stands. Thankfully, the building was empty.

I don’t have much context to share on this piece; when I bought it, the image was dry mounted professionally to a rigid backing (not foamcore) and was applied in two different pieces.
